FIELD LIMITS
The field limits for each race are as follows (these are the same as 2025):
- 80km ultra marathon Solo: 400 runners
- 80km Ultra Marathon teams : 250 teams
- 42km trail marathon: 400 runners
EXPLAINER: We have higher field limits for solos compared to relay teams for the following reasons
- To encourage and foster greatness. Running an ultra marathon is a huge accomplishment, for many people it’s a life changing experience that redefines their limits. Running the ultra is also increasing in popularity – so we want to allow more people to pursue this epic goal.
- Individual runners train all year for this! Running 80km solo is an high-investment activity (time, money etc). We think that if you’re willing to put your hand up to run 80km, you should get the chance to run!
- To provide a better race for everyone. By slightly reducing the number of teams will mean less congestion and easier access to checkpoints and other course areas.
Make no mistake – WE LOVE TEAMS – the new field limits will provide a better balance between solos and teams, reflect current entry trends and will help us provide a better event experience for everyone.

UTMB Qualifying Race & ITRA Points

The 80km Margaret River Ultra Marathon individual race is registered with the UTMB and the International Trail Running Association (ITRA).
- UTMB points
- ITRA 3 points (80km) and 1 point (42km
Participants who finish the MRUM 80km race will receive a UTMB Performance Index in the category of the race as well as ITRA 3 points.
Participants who finish the MRUM 42km race will receive ITRA 1 point.
The Performance Index is used in a similar way as the ‘qualifying points’ to show a runner’s experience at different distances and can be used to enter the UTMB World Series Events and combined with Running Stones to enter the UTMB Finals.

UTMB Index races to do not give Running Stones to finishers, these are only available to finishers at UTMB World Series Events and UTMB World Series Majors.
